Waiting for paint to dry in between layers makes me impatient, so instead of being impatient, I spent that time to take photos of the process. I usually forget, but I'm getting better at it.

I started with a rough sketch with a charcoal pencil, painted the outlines with  yellow ochre, then I put down blocks of colour.

I thought I was done with owls, at least for a while, but after I did some sketching over morning coffee, I went ahead and painted this sweet wild thing.

 Cheers!

My daily practice.

Whether I feel like it or not, I put something down on paper. Every day, even if it's just a scrawl or something I tear up and throw away. I use pencils, watercolours, ink, pastels to keep me interested.

I've found that if I go too long without making something, I lose energy, interest, and there's a danger of hopelessness creeping in... because my art is passion and if I lose any part of it, it's like losing myself.

As the slow process of decluttering and destashing progresses, I come across materials that I'd forgotten about.

Today's foray brought up some scrim and a vintage broken necklace with white beads, and some scraps of cheesecloth that I'd dyed with diluted acrylic paint.

I put them all together and stitched them on a piece of Italian linen.

Using up my supply of French lavender. I find it soothing and it's supposed to promote sleep, so I've been making sachets to slip into my closet, drawers, and under my pillow. I added some hangers (very useful). I've made more than enough for me, so I've put a few in my Etsy shop.

Part of my practice is mark making.
Sometimes it starts with using up paint left over on my palette.
Other times, it's a good exercise in shape and colour.
And a good way to empty the mind.

This is what I painted last night, actually past midnight. I was too fidgety to read or go to bed, so I did the one thing that calms me down. I painted. When it was finished, I saw a woman who persists and overcomes. That's been my life so far, so you could call this a biographical painting.

Nevertheless, she persisted. Mixed media on 9x12 watercolour paper.

This morning I watched a program on TV that was about buying a property in Cornwall (England). Halfway through, the host visited a local artist who made prints using shells and seaweed from the beach, as well as a.... fish (a dead one). She used black paint and white fabric.

I was ready to try something new, so I used a feather and Japanese paper. After several printings, I managed to get three that I liked.

These two are now in my Etsy shop.

You never know where inspiration will come from.

Today is officially the first day of spring.

Finishing up the week with another recycled painting. This canvas was a big one, and painting over it was very liberating. I used a blue palette over a black background.

The Final Frontier II

This small work may be my last owl - for a while, at least. I used watercolours and Derwent pencils,

Happy Weekend!

Continuing yesterday's post... I added a little colour at the bottom of the painting.
It looks like it will stay like this because I like it.

Space saving.
Recycling old canvasses.

I covered this painting with black paint, using a palette knife and moving it around with a rag, letting bits of the original colours show through.

Now I wait to see what happens next, if anything. (I have no idea.)

I usually paint quickly and continue until I'm finished. This painting, though, was a slow one. At every stage, I spent some time just looking at it. I imagined it, part by part, in my head, and in colour.

 Work in progress.

Going big with the owl, with a 20x16-inch canvas.

Little sketches and doodles betraying something of an obsession.
Gathering up my courage do go much bigger. My excuse is always that I have no space, especially to store all my canvasses - and there are many.

Owls, owls, everywhere.

I watch TV, but when it's longer than an hour, I get restless.

In between watching the Oscars last night, I did a little sketching. I copied the sketches on mixed media paper and coloured them with watercolours.

This morning I finished it.

This is the third of my owlets, inspired by a photo I have of a baby owl that's so cute that every time I feel down, I look at it and my spirits are lifted.

A large sheet of heavy watercolour paper.

A big wide paint brush.

You have 7 minutes.

I'm starting the week by testing these paints. I wasn't sure what "dry gouache" was, but the effect is almost identical to watercolours.

Nice colours, with the help of a black pencil.
