During my (slow-motion) cleaning up I came across some sketches I made of vintage-style baby dresses. Since I've taken up stitching again, I transferred the idea to a quiltie.

I want to add a safety pin but I haven't decided on the placement.

Monoprints

In the last couple of days my practice consisted of monoprinting. I wanted to make some painted papers to tear up and use for collages (if I ever get around to that  - haha!)

I made a series of monoprints some years ago and saved the masks and stencils.

And used some of them again for the painted papers idea.

This one is on thin, but very strong, Japanese paper. It may not go into the collage painted papers pile; I think it can stand on its own.

A dead battery and the weather

Last Saturday we got hit by a surprise ice storm followed by rain. The worst part were the high winds, coming from the east. My home faces east so I got the full brunt of it. The wind created some very strange noises, especially the one that sounded like a foghorn. This went on for 24 hours; it was hard to stay calm with nerves on edge.

I did a little stitching, trying out some embroidery.

I also discovered that my land line wasn't working at full speed. It turns out that the phone is connected to the modem, along with Internet and TV, and has a battery in it for backup during outages. We didn't have an outage but...the phone is dependent on the battery no matter what. I'm unable to call people on their cell phones (although I can receive their calls) but I can connect to other land lines.

As I wait for the new battery, I think how simple it was when the phone was independent and not reliant on some battery that you have to replace every 2 years.

Be safe, wherever you are.

Many thanks to my readers for your supportive words... my mojo is slowly coming back.

My stitching certainly helped. Two of my safety-pin quilties are sold and are on their way to Australia. This is all the more special for me because they're going to an area of Sydney that my oldest and best friend, recently departed (gone to the Divine) lived in for decades before her illness.

To further boost my mojo, I pulled out my monoprint paraphernalia, getting it ready to make some new prints.

Books by artists also help get my juices flowing. Yesterday I spent some time with this one. For the paintings, the colours, the humour....

Still stitching

In search of my lost, hopefully temporary, passion for creating art every day, I'm continuing to stitch. I have many ideas floating in my head, and usually I'd be trying them out and enjoying the process. It's almost like the energy is gone. It's not a nice feeling.

On the plus side, I'm walking my neighbour's dogs every day and that's getting me out and among the trees! I tell myself in time, I'll regain my balance.

Meanwhile, I made this for a friend. Luz meaning light, I envisioned sparkly lights around the name.

Safety Pin dress #2

This is crushed velvet.

I don't like to work with it.
I prefer normal velvet.
Also,  crushed velvet is hard to photograph - you have to get the light just right to see the true colour which, in this case, is red.
But I have this length of crushed velvet and I'm not going to let it get the better of me.

I know, it's a little weird. And so is this design, a work in progress, but I like it. I think.

Vintage stitching

Vintage ticking is one of my preferred fabrics. It evokes those Colonial interiors - the authentic ones - that I've always found beautiful in their simplicity - utilitarian with artistic flourishes like folk art and handmade rugs.

I started this yesterday. Every single item of this little quilt is antique or vintage. Except the thread!

 And finished it today.

In keeping with my resolution to make something every day, I started another dress quiltie. I didn't like how it was turning out, so I took out most of the stitches and set it aside.

It was a good time to do the vacuuming (I did the dusting yesterday). Instead, I checked my email. A friend sent me a picture of a painting of an angel. Another email mentioned an angel.

So...

I pulled out my watercolours and painted this.

Resolution kept. At least for today :-)

The little dress is finished.

I played around with buttons, but opted for a vintage mother-of-pearl buckle because I wanted to use this pale pink silk fragment - one thing leads to another...

The safety pin was completely unexpected. I don't know how the thought came to me but it seemed appropriate.

No matter. The important thing is that I finished it.

It's been a beautiful day, still on the cold side, but with bright sunshine and blue skies. I didn't have to push myself to go out as I've been doing lately. I have two dogs to thank for getting me back into the great outdoors on a daily basis, my neighbour's two bichons frisés, all white and fluffy, affectionate and mostly well-behaved.

And, wonder of wonders, I actually sat down and pulled out my sewing supplies.
This is what I'm working on at the moment. A little dress...

Wishing you a peaceful and happy weekend.

Hello, World.

My blog has been moribund lately. Why? Because the last couple of months had a few bumps in the road that I had to navigate, but spring is here and I intend to plant some new seeds.

I haven't done much art work lately because, I confess, I've given in to moments of fatigue and discouragement, but not for long. If nothing else, I am a fighter.

A very short while ago, I lost my oldest and dearest friend to cancer. It was one of those cases where she was recovering and then.... Well, I have no words.

One thing that has helped is to make a list of things that have to be addressed, then follow through. Some of them are tough, but procrastination only makes things worse and harder to handle.

There's a second list that's very important: a list of all the things that are positive and good. This list gives me the push to tackled the items on the first list.

Does that make sense?

Until next time, may you live with ease.

While de-cluttering, which is happening at a snail's pace, I found a box of little dolls - a project that never saw the light of day.

Since any excuse to take a break from de-cluttering is welcome, I took the dolls to my work table and....

I'm a mini-collector; I collect 3-4 things of a kind, and that's it.

I love old frames. Even damaged ones.

This frame was made from two damaged frames and hand-painted.

I found this frame, destined for the trash, and rescued it. It was perfect for the antique lace samples.

I also decorate with them. This changes once in a while.

Returning to my artistic roots: watercolours.
I began my life as an artist with a tray of watercolours and had the time of my life. Eventually I moved on to acrylics and collage and textiles, but watercolours are my first love.

Row of Houses, watercolour on paper, 9x12 in. Just listed in my Etsy shop.

Over the weekend I watched a program that had a lot of owls in it. While I was watching, I did a little sketching. The sketch became the model for this.

Acrylic on canvas paper. Just listed in my Etsy shop.

Sailboats caught my fancy, so I made these tags. I used vintage linen and ticking, and white 3D paper.

I'll list them in my Etsy shop later today.

 Back to work!

I enjoy making these tags. They're versatile in their uses, and they also fit the occasion.

So... it's time for Christmas trees. And a sailboat.
This set of 6 tags are now in my Etsy shop.

My cataract surgery went very well. I spent 2.5 hours at the hospital and the procedure took 15 minutes. Healing is faster than was predicted.

In 10 days, I'll be going in for the other eye. And then it will all be over. Feeling grateful for the very good care from both the eye clinic and the hospital, and my provincial healthcare program.

 Thank you for stopping by!

Time really does fly. I haven't blogged for a month, which is a long time for me.

I've been tending to my "garden" (life), and will be having some surgery later this month, one of those in-and-out routine procedures that will make my daily life easier.

Meanwhile, I have been working and tending to my little shop, although I had to abandon the daily painting. For now.

Thank you for stopping by.
